Alabama Map Information

In 1819, Alabama became the 22nd state and is now known by the state nickname as the “Heart of Dixie.”  The state has a rich history, but a good part of it has been in some sort of conflict.  During the Civil War, Alabama was a stronghold for the South and later became a key area during the civil rights movement. This is reflected in the state motto,”we dare to defend our rights.”
The state capital is Montgomery which sits in the south central part of the state.  The largest city is Birmingham at 229,000 residents, but that number dropped 5.4% between 2000 and 2006.  Interstate 85, 59, and 65 run north and south, while interstate 10 and 20 move east to west as you can see in the map.
